Since the dawn of the Internet email spamming quickly became one of our most common and annoying problems. This is especially true for small business owners as not a day goes by without a few spam emails finding their way into their inboxes.

This is why, at Digital Renegades, we believe it is extremely important to educate our clients about potential problems. We are warning our clients of the frequently used schemes that will come knocking on their doors. These schemes pretend to be friendly but they can be extremely harmful. A client forwarded this email message to us. In this article we break it down to illustrate the problem.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spam

From what I can tell, you are doing a lot of great marketing, but around 98 per cent of leads to your website are leaving without taking any action on your site. I can show you how, through reverse IP lookup, we can identify the companies and individuals visiting your site. I can also provide you with the contact info – including names, emails and phone numbers – of these visitors, effectively doubling or tripling the number of leads that can be harvested from your existing web traffic.

My team has over twelve years of experience driving results for our clients, and we want you to be a part of their long reputation for success. We’re based in Los Angeles, we’re Google partners, and we’ve received accolades from Inc Magazine and the LA Business Journal.

At first glance the so-called “Losing 98 percent of leads” email is terrifying. It has become quite widespread and when you read this email for the first time, it does sound quite convincing. We all know that the majority of our website visitors leave without taking any action. It doesn’t even matter how good or big our business is – that is just a fact. You might believe the promises this email makes you, especially with competition being as tight as it is.

The Scare Tactics

This particular spam email suffers from several common “tell” signs, which are “scare tactics”. While the “you are losing 98 percent of leads on your website” line is truly horrifying, as it could mean the end of one’s business, the immediate question should be, “how can they see that 98 per cent of the leads on your website are leaving”? The simple answer is they can’t, not without access to your analytics data which they don’t have. This should be enough to dismiss the authority of the email but lets dive in deeper.

The blatant straightforwardness and familiarity of the email also stands out as a “tell” sign. Respected digital marketing companies approach potential clients with more restraint and professionalism. They want to seem acclaimed, so they throw in the fact that they are “Google partners” and that they received accolades from respected sources, but you can’t even be sure if that’s true, until you contact them back, which is exactly what they want.

Last, but not least, we have the “Reverse IP” promise, which sounds like the answer to all problems. But, in reality, nothing like that exists. Reverse IP tracking allows you t0 see where the computer using that particular IP is roughly located – that’s it. There is no real way to find out the names, phone numbers and email addresses of the people visiting your website, without them giving it to you.

How To Stay Safe

To summarize, if you receive this email, don’t panic.  It’s spam! They don’t want to help you double your leads. They are fishing for leads and they try to scare people into contacting them. Stay safe! Always read your emails carefully. Any promise that someone claims will skyrocket your business must be taken with a pinch of salt. If you are not sure — then be safe. Contact us for advice and we will happily assist you.
